Brain on Fire: My Month of Madness by Susannah Cahalan

This one is going to be a little different than normal for me since it’s a nonfiction book, but it is worth every bit of this post! I read this a little while ago, but I’m posting in celebration of the upcoming release of the Netflix special on this story! Here is the trailer for it:

This book has a special place in my heart because I met the author years ago at a Dysautonomia/Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) conference. I have POTS myself, a autonomic nervous system disorder, so I can relate to the tons of medical testings and unknowns. (If you want to learn more about POTS, click here).

This is a true story about Susannah, a well-to-do journalist who’s working her fanny off in the field. All of the sudden, she starts to come down with neuro symptoms. Before long, her boyfriend, parents, and coworkers start to pick-up on this all-of-the-sudden manic behavior and get worried about her. Before long, she is stuck in the hospital, chained to the bed, with absolutely no memory of what happened. This is her story about how she went through hell and back, the love and dedication her friends and family had to help her through it, and the amazing tales of the medical world. It’s breathtaking.

HIGHLY recommend this. I would read it before you watch it on Netflix. Although, I’m SO excited about the actors chosen for this movie. I LOVE THEM ALL! This is a fast-pace insane story that you just can’t believe is true. I wanted to just be with her to hold her hand and tell her it’s going to be okay through the entire thing. All the feels! Drop everything and go read this now!
