The Safe Place by Anna Downes

I’m pretty sure everyone could use a good swim vacation right about now after taking a look at this cover.

Thank you Minotaur Books for my gifted copy in exchange for my honest review.

Synopsis: Welcome to paradise…will you ever be able to leave? Emily is a mess. Emily Proudman just lost her acting agent, her job, and her apartment in one miserable day. Emily is desperate. Scott Denny, a successful and charismatic CEO, has a problem that neither his business acumen nor vast wealth can fix. Until he meets Emily. Emily is perfect. Scott offers Emily a summer job as a housekeeper on his remote, beautiful French estate. Enchanted by his lovely wife Nina, and his eccentric young daughter, Aurelia, Emily falls headlong into this oasis of wine-soaked days by the pool. But soon Emily realizes that Scott and Nina are hiding dangerous secrets, and if she doesn’t play along, the consequences could be deadly.

This one has had high hopes by a lot of readers in the mystery community. I went in with some as well, but was let down. This was a totally predictable read. I could’ve turned to my husband and asked him what he thought it would be about and how he could’ve seen the ending and he would’ve gotten it right. I think I just read too many mystery/suspense novels to get the thrill out of all the ones I read anymore. The writing was great, which is why I’m giving it the rating that I am. It was slow to start and just had an unoriginal plot in my opinion. Can’t love them all!
